Lifting equipment inspection is a statutory examination of cranes, hoists, slings, shackles, lifting beams, and all associated rigging gear to verify they are in safe working condition. The inspection checks for structural damage, wear, fatigue cracks, and compliance with rated safe working load (SWL) — ensuring they will not fail under operational loads.

Under LOLER and most international standards, lifting accessories (slings, chains, shackles) must be inspected every 6 months, while cranes and hoists typically require a thorough examination at least once every 12 months — or after any exceptional circumstance such as a failure or major modification.
